Springfield is an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States and is a suburb of Washington, D.C. Within Springfield are three census-designated places (CDPs): Springfield, West Springfield, and North Springfield, including a large portion of Newington. All are officially titled Springfield by the US Postal Service.
DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there were 30,417 people, 10,495 households, and 7,472 families residing in the Springfield CDP. The population density was 3,117.9 people per square mile. There were 10,832 housing units at an average density of 1,110.3/sq mi. There were 10,495 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples living together, and 28.8% were non-families. 22.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.37. In Springfield VA, the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 34.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. The median income for a household in Springfield VA was $69,640, and the median income for a family was $73,903; as of a 2007 estimate, these figures had risen to $77,188 and $87,619, respectively. Males had a median income of $45,679 versus $36,075 for females. The per capita income for Springfield VA was $27,807. About 3.7% of families and 5.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.4% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.
